Imprint Digital has invested in an IFS-supplied Horizon HT-1000V variable three knife trimmer and Horizon BQ-470 four clamp perfect binder to support demand for fast turnaround, flexible and efficient book and journal production
The Exeter print production arm of publisher Imprint Academic specialises in soft and hardback publications in a range of subjects including philosophy, history, politics, psychology and consciousness studies. It also completes work for external and self-publishers
Adam Roppert, Production Director, explains the reason for the investment: “We had a Horizon HT-30 three knife trimmer which we just ran and ran. We looked at both a like-for-like replacement and the HT-1000V.
“We chose the HT-1000V because of the additional production capacity and its flexibility with different jobs. Day to day we are being asked to handle all the normal book sizes and everything in between. The new system can manage that workload easily. And it produces very nice books.
He continues: “It is very quick to set up so we can chop and change in 30 seconds rather than the 10 to 15 minutes the older system was taking. There was also more maintenance on the older system and that time is now being spent on producing books.”
The HT-1000V was picked to future-proof the business too: “We are not getting asked for a lot of book of one production at the moment but if that increases the HT-1000V has the option to easily add variable software. This gives us a clear upgrade path if we would like it.”
The BQ-470 was a like for like replacement and it will run inline with the HT-1000V: “We had an old Horizon system and it was time to upgrade. We were happy with the older system’s reliability and consistency and knew the replacement would be exactly what we needed for the work we are doing. Its quick and easy set-up will also help us further streamline production.”
The Horizon HT-1000V variable three-knife trimmer produces high quality variable short-run and book of one production at up to 1,000 books per hour. It can handle untrimmed and trimmed sizes, up to 65mm thick. It features a uniquely designed user-friendly interface that enables intuitive operation and fine-tune adjustment. 200 jobs can be memorized for repeat orders or special applications
The small-footprinted 1,350 books per hour Horizon BQ-470 four-clamp perfect binder is ideally suited to mid-range soft back book production with higher production speeds, instant make readies for runs-of-one. It can bind up to 65 mm thickness and offers fully automated set-up through an intuitive icon based LCD touchscreen.
